Use it to notify users about:

  • changes in the process/procedure that is covered in a course
  • a new feature in software that is presented in a course
  • a new module added to a course
  • something significant being changed in the training material they read before

Course content updates apply to all participants, including people who have already completed the course.

Their progress will change accordingly. E.g. the progress can change from 100% to 50% if half of the course modules were updated.

People who are already enrolled into a course see the version of modules that were the latest the first time they browsed the course. By default, further updates are not shown to previously enrolled participants.

To push changes that were made to course content to participants who were enrolled before:

  1. Go to the course administration page.
  2. Click Check for content updates
  3. The system will check if there are updates available and let you know.
  4. When some of the current participants have outdated content, you will be able to push the updates at this stage.
  5. Participants will see the update while the completed modules with no changes will remain completed.

Types of updates

Changes that happen in a quiz that is included in a course can't be pushed to course participants. If you had major changes in a quiz and need course participants to retake it:

  • remove the quiz module from the course
  • push the update
  • add the same quiz in the course
  • push the update

Course participants will get a notification and will have to retake the whole quiz while other completed modules will remain completed.

There are three types of content updates:

  • automatic updates
  • minor updates (pushed only when significant updates are available)
  • significant updates

Automatic updates

The following updates are pushed to existing course participants automatically and don't require you to click the Check for content updates button:

  • renaming the course itself
  • renaming a module
  • renaming a section
  • change of a course image
  • deletion of an empty section in a course

Minor updates

The following updates are pushed to existing course participants only when significant updates are available (until then, the check for updates will be saying there're no updates):

  • moving modules
  • moving sections

Significant updates

The following updates are pushed to existing course participants when you click the Check for content updates button:

  • adding module (page or quiz)
  • new version of a module (page) available
  • removing a module
  • removing a section with modules

Notifications for participants

Course participants who receive content updates get email notifications:

  • if before the update, their status was Started, and the update happened to one of the page modules that the participant viewed before
  • if before the update, their status was Completed, and the update happened to one of the page modules that the participant viewed before or a new module was added

Notifications are not sent in other cases.
